The hot standby router protocol (HSRP) is a process developed by Cisco, which uses router pairs to increase the availability of routes. Instead of being dependent on only one physical standard gateway, several devices can be merged to one logical router with the HSRP. If one of the devices in the group (the primary router) fails, the secondary router automatically reacts and assumes the role of the standard gateway / primary router.

This means: If a connection fails, the data traffic automatically switches to other lines. Physical line problems or network nodes no longer present any availability problems.

"The rapid "LTE" mobile communication standard can adopt two tasks in fallback solutions in principle. One as a primary Internet connection (1), whereby much slower DSL or IDSN connections represent the fallback medium. The other as the transmission standard for the fallback case (2) - i.e., if a cable-based broadband technology, such as VDSL, provides the primary connection.
